Nest of Dreams

A turquoise necklace of six rare vintage medium-sized, egg-shaped turquoise beads, with a collection of intricate vintage metal Berber and Afghan beads and a large contemporary Berber bead crafted right before my eyes; it took about one hour to make. I love large egg-sized turquoises. These are increasingly rare to find, and I bought them about 20 years ago.

Six rare turquoise beads, kept for twenty years

As these are natural stones, they are imperfect, and each bead shows it in its own way. The vintage Berber and Afghan metal beads around them are intricate and old; the one large Berber bead is contemporary, made while I watched.

It belongs to Circular by Design, my collection made predominantly from vintage, antique and recycled components, breathing new life into outdated or forgotten jewelry.

Environmental Impact Statement

At 151 grams, this necklace’s reuse of existing materials is estimated to avoid 14.9 kg of CO₂e, roughly the tailpipe emissions of driving 60 kilometres in an average car, and 116 litres of freshwater.

Estimated environmental savings are based on the materials and weights in this piece and Asymmetric by Design’s proprietary environmental-impact model, commissioned by Asymmetric by Design and developed by Oxia Initiative. Results estimate the impact avoided by reusing existing materials instead of sourcing an equivalent quantity of newly produced, mined or sourced material. Figures are modelled estimates, not direct measurements.

Questions about this turquoise necklace

What does turquoise symbolize in jewelry?

Turquoise is among the oldest jewelry stones: GIA notes it was buried in ancient Egyptian tombs, where it was called mefkat, a word that also meant joy and delight, and it has been loved from Egypt to Mesoamerica to China. In Nest of Dreams it carries something more personal: six beads I kept for about 20 years. (source: GIA)

Is all the turquoise vintage?

Yes. The six egg-shaped turquoise beads are vintage, bought about 20 years ago. The large Berber bead beside them is contemporary, made in front of me, and I say so because I describe every material exactly.

Buying a piece

How long does shipping take?

Orders leave within 1 to 3 business days by Express Post and arrive in 2 to 5 business days across Canada, insured and tracked. International orders travel by Canada Post in 2 to 3 weeks, with duties paid by the buyer.

Can I return a piece?

Yes. Returns are accepted within 14 days of delivery, with return shipping at the buyer’s cost.

Will it fit, and can the length be changed?

The necklaces featured in my collections run from 16 to 18 inches, and each product’s Details tab gives its length. A length or clasp change is $20 CAD plus materials, and matching earrings are $25 CAD. Write to me before you order and I will tell you what the piece allows.

Is it really antique or vintage?

I describe every material exactly as I know it. Most of my components are antique, vintage or recycled, with some recent ones, and each product page names which is which. Write to me to ask what is known of any piece before you order.

Why is each piece one of a kind?

Most designs are one of a kind, because they are built from treasures I have collected since 1978, and no two components are the same. Occasionally, limited quantities of particular components allow related designs. When a piece is gone, it is gone.

What if I have a metal allergy?

The metal content of antique and vintage components cannot be guaranteed, so please tell me about any allergy before you order. I will tell you what I know of the piece, or suggest one that suits you better.
